what we ask for: a poem/prayer in a pandemic
the prayers people ask for
bring me to my knees:
it’s simple things,
and almost always for
i’m praying for you this morning:
for your family, your community,
for the greater good,
for the things that seem
selfish to ask for.
may you get an extra half hour of sleep.
may someone else do the dishes.
may your children play peacefully
and quietly this morning.
may every call be uninterrupted.
may you have enough cash
for all the items on your list.
and may the store have
all the items on your list.
may your voice be heard
amid the panic.
may you get surprise good news.
may you stay healthy.
may something make you laugh
hysterically this afternoon.
may you remember to breathe:
may you notice the still brilliant
and feel peace descending.
see that first star
that light so persistent,
