Bio
Dani Jeremiah Gabriel is the author of four books of poetry and three children’s books. They are living the unexpected reality of queer/trans middle age, and they write about surviving the everyday apocalypses and the very dangerous possibilities of hope. Dani is a Bay Area poet; born in San Francisco, they graduated from UC Berkeley, received their MFA from Mills College, were the Poet Laureate of El Cerrito from 2018-2020, and currently live in Oakland, CA.
Dani has taught writing in prison, jail, juvenile hall, schools, libraries, and community organizations. They have created and coordinated work funded by the California Arts Council and the San Francisco Arts Commission. They got their start as a writer at a writing group for queer youth, and went on to be a Student Teacher Poet with June Jordan’s Poetry for the People before pursuing their MFA at Mills College. In the early 2000s they toured with the Molotov Mouths Outspoken Word Troupe, lighting up the stage at venues throughout the West Coast and in Vancouver, Canada. They published a self-titled book with the Molotov Mouths with Manic D Press. In 2009 they published their first solo collection of poetry, The Woman You Write Poems About, with the Civil Defense Press collective which grew out of the Molotov Mouths. This book wrestled with the struggles of motherhood and mental illness, and the women who become monsters in the public imagination. It took over ten years before they published their next collection, in 2021 with Nomadic Press (now distributed by Black Lawrence Press). Low Rent Prophet is about recovery, redemption, and inconvenient faith. The week that book came out they were diagnosed with Melanoma. Then in 2022 they published a book of poetry largely about the pandemic, Love Poems in the Apocalypse, with Main Street Rag Publishing Company. In 2023 they published a book of poems about living with cancer, in the middle of all this living, with Pochino Press. Dani has also published a children’s book about a transgender boy’s journey called Sam! with Penny Candy Books and two biographies for children which were published by Capstone Press.
Dani was previously a Deacon in the Episcopal Church, and remains compelled by stories of faith and redemption, both of which feature heavily in their work. Their work also highlights themes of justice and struggle. They have eaten fire with the Lesbian Avengers, gotten arrested protesting war, and marched for justice with many movements. Dani knows the power of the love poem, and writes them frequently for their partner of several decades. Dani is the parent of two teenagers, who they consider to be their best work.work.
